December 21, 2010 Police remove relatives of detained opposition supporters and activists to make way for a police van outside the prison walls in Minsk, Belarus Polish Foreign Ministry condemned, Monday, violence in Belarus against government opponents that followed the declaration that Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko won a fourth term with 79,67 percent of the vote. "The foreign ministry condemns mass beatings and detainments of demonstrators on the streets of Minsk. The brutality of security forces is unacceptable," Poland's foreign ministry said in a statement. Police and security forces in Belarus battled and arrested hundreds of opposition activists who protested against the result of the country's presidential election. Cases of severe beatings of demonstrators, politicians and journalists have been reported. Minister Sikorski and his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle issued a joint statement expressing regret that the elections did not meet free and fair criteria. Both ministers visited Minsk in early November urging Lukashenko to carry out the elections in line with international standards. Source: The Warsaw Voice
