THE MEL LEARN LAB, LOCATED
IN KRANNERT, IS THE LIBRARY
OF THE FUTURE, COMBINING
TECHNOLOGY
WITH NEW METHODS OF TEACHING.
THE MEL LEARN LAB IS
A MULTIFUNCTIONAL LAB
AND CLASSROOM.
STUDENTS CAN COME IN AND
USE IT AS A OPEN LAB.
WE TEACH HERE.
IT'S GEARED FOR COLLABORATION.
THIS CLASSROOM, YOU
KNOW, CONNECTS ITSELF
TO THE LEARNING MUCH MORE
THAN WE EVER DID IN THE PAST,
BY CREATING COLLABORATIVE
ENVIRONMENTS,
ESPECIALLY WITH BUSINESS
INFORMATION.
YOU KNOW, INFORMATION
IS ALL ELECTRONIC NOW,
SO WHAT WE REALLY HAVE TO DO IS
TAKE THAT AND NOT JUST HOLD IT
AND SHOW IT OFF BUT CONNECT
IT INTO THE STUDENTS' LIVES.
MY FIRST REACTION WAS, IT
WAS DEFINITELY DIFFERENT
THAN ALL THE REST
OF MY CLASSROOMS.
A LOT OF THEM WERE JUST THE
TEACHER WOULD BE STANDING
IN THE FRONT, AND WE'D ALL BE
SITTING AT DESKS AND STUFF.
BUT I CAME IN AND IT WAS REALLY
COOL BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL
AT DIFFERENT ANGLES, AND YOU
COULD SIT BY DIFFERENT PEOPLE
AND YOU COULD SIT IN
LITTLE BLOCKS WITH PEOPLE,
SO THAT WAS REALLY NICE.
WELL, THE MEL LEARN LAB
DIFFERS FROM THE CONCEPT
OF TRADITIONAL LEARNING IN THAT
THE INSTRUCTOR IS MUCH MORE
INTEGRATED WITH THE STUDENTS.
THE STUDENTS ARE
MUCH MORE INTEGRATED
INTO THE CONTENT OF THE CLASS.
THE CRISSCROSS DESIGN,
THE MULTIPLE PROJECTION,
THE DRY-ERASE BOARDS --
WHAT THESE REALLY DO IS CREATE
A MUCH MORE FLUID ENVIRONMENT
SO THAT THE STUDENTS
ARE NOT ONLY KIND
OF CONSUMING THE CONTENT OF THE
CLASS BUT PARTICIPATING IN IT.
THE LEARN LAB DESIGN
WAS ACTUALLY BASED
ON SOME SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH
INTO DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES.
THE WAY THAT COMPUTERS ARE
CLUSTERED IS REALLY SET UP FOR
THAT TEAM-COLLABORATION DYNAMIC.
EMPLOYERS ARE ALWAYS KIND OF
EXPECTING STUDENTS TO BE ABLE
TO WORK IN A TEAM, TO
COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY.
THE TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM
HAS YOU SITTING IN ROWS,
STARING AT THE BACK
OF SOMEONE'S HEAD.
HERE, NO MATTER WHICH
WAY YOU TURN OR LOOK,
YOU'RE CATCHING SOME
OTHER STUDENT'S EYE.
YOU CAN COMMUNICATE ACROSS
THE ROOM, ACROSS THE COMPUTER,
BECAUSE YOU'RE MORE FACE-TO-FACE
WITH MORE OF THE CLASSROOM.
FOR US, THIS BRINGS
THOSE TOGETHER
AND PROVIDES A WHOLE
NEW LEARNING EXPERIENCE,
INCORPORATING THINGS THAT
LIBRARIES REALLY CARE ABOUT --
INFORMATION LITERACY -- INTO
THE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE,
AND IT'S A MUCH MORE
ENERGETIC EXPERIENCE,
A MUCH MORE IMMERSIVE
EXPERIENCE,
PROVIDING JUST A WHOLE
NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR WAYS
FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN.
THIS CLASSROOM, THERE'S
SO MUCH INTERACTION.
YOU'RE ABLE TO JUST
ALWAYS VIEW SOMETHING,
ALWAYS SOMETHING GOING ON.
AND YOU'RE ACTUALLY INTERACTING
WITH OTHER STUDENTS WHILE YOU'RE
DOING IT, 'CAUSE YOU CAN GO
UP TO THE SCREEN AND CLICK
ON THE SCREEN AND BE ABLE
TO SHOW STUDENTS
HOW TO DO SOMETHING.
AND I'M MORE OF A
HANDS-ON LEARNER,
AND THAT REALLY DEFINITELY HELPS
ME BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING,
WATCH SOMEONE ELSE DO
IT, AND THEN I'M ABLE
TO GO UP AND TRY MYSELF.
AND IF I DO IT WRONG,
THE TEACHER KNOWS HOW
TO CORRECT ME THERE.
TAKING THIS IDEA AND NOT
JUST ANNOUNCING, "WELL,
WE HAVE THIS COOL, CUTTING-EDGE,
TECHY CLASSROOM," BUT,
"LOOK WHAT WE CAN DO WITH IT,
LOOK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU,
LOOK WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR
STUDENTS HERE IN THIS SPACE."
THE MEL LEARN LAB REALLY
CREATES A VERY DYNAMIC PLACE
FOR LEARNING.
IT'S PHASE ONE OF A MULTIPHASE
RENOVATION FOR THE LIBRARY
AND FOR A LOT OF
DIFFERENT AREAS ON CAMPUS.
SO IT'S REALLY THE BEGINNING
OF CHANGING THE CONCEPT
OF WHAT GOING TO
COLLEGE IS AND LEARNING.
AND COME USE IT, BECAUSE ONCE
YOU START TO EXPERIENCE IT,
IT REALLY CHANGES HOW
YOU THINK ABOUT THINGS.
